Description |
Harrison attended the Republican National Convention in Chicago in 1884 and was considered a possible “dark horse” candidate, but he did not launch a campaign that year. In 1888 he did run for president, basing his campaign in Indianapolis. He daily addressed visiting delegations first at his Delaware Street house and later at University Park. He won the presidency after receiving 100,000 fewer popular votes than the incumbent Grover Cleveland because he received 233 votes in the Electoral College compared to Cleveland’s 168. Harrison’s vice president was Levi P. Morton of New York. |
