Mattie Coney founded Citizens Forum, an organization dedicated to improvement of neighborhoods in order to combat housing discrimination. Citizens Forum was founded with the idea that the hard work of the individual could improve the circumstances of their surroundings and effect change. The success of the program made Mattie Coney well known throughout the nation. |

Mattie Coney retired from teaching to found Citizens Forum, a grass-roots neighborhood organization that encouraged good citizenship and individual responsibility through community organization and civic engagement in 1964. Coney was known for her no-nonsense philosophies called "Mattieisms" and was acknowledged for her writings and work at Citizens Forum by receiving many awards. The Citizens Forum model was used in cities like Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee, New Orleans, New York, and Washington, D.C. |
